The landscape behind the electric fence is not ours; it belongs to the cow. But the cow belongs to the farmer, and probably so does the land. The farmer sells the milk to the dairy, which sells it to the supermarket. If we don’t buy the milk, the land might eventually belong to the bank. We belong to the supermarket and the bank, even if we’d like to think it is the opposite. I no longer understand whether the electric fence keeps me outside the pasture, the cow inside it, or maybe vice versa.
Just as a museum fence keeps us from getting too close to a painting, an electric fence keeps us from getting too close to the landscape. In a maze of fences, it can become difficult to tell whether we are trespassing, or whether the cow is. It is unclear who owns the landscape.
